Draft Physical Activity Strategy

Closes 17 Feb 2020

Opened 18 Dec 2019

The London Borough of Redbridge is proposing to adopt a new physical activity strategy. Although we have a great offer of facilities in terms of parks, playing fields and leisure centres, the borough still has high levels of physical inactivity. Physical inactivity has an enormous impact on the lives of individuals and their families. Physical inactivity is associated with a higher risk of poor health – both mental and physical – and early death. This includes increased risk of anxiety and depression; increased risk of Type II diabetes and increased risk of high blood pressure.

Evidence tells us that physical activity is one of the most effective means of improving the physical and mental health and wellbeing of residents as well as promoting social development. Apart from countering the conditions mentioned above, it also strengthens older people reducing their risk of falls. This contributes to a longer, healthier life. We want to adopt a strategy that is effective in helping inactive people become active, and assists others to become consistently active. In short, we want to make it easier for residents to develop and maintain healthy habits.

Our strategy aims to help as many residents as possible move from being physically inactive – by which we mean people who take less than 30 minutes per week on a regular basis – into choosing active lives, and taking part in regular physical activity. This will look different across our life cycle.

Why We Are Consulting

Through this consultation we wish to learn from residents how we could enhance the draft strategy to ensure it is able to have the greatest impact. We would also like to learn a bit about your physical activity. You can view a copy of the draft strategy below.

We also want to hear how physical activity has benefitted you, your friends or your family with a view to including this as a case study in the final strategy. If you would like to share your experience with us and help encourage your neighbours and other residents to take part in physical activity please contact randal.smith@redbridge.gov.uk
